See below: For ultrasound the ectopic has to be big enough to see. Following the rise of the pregnancy hormone bhcg can help to tell if the pregnancy is normal even before something can be seen on ultrasound. Also ask your doctor to get a Progesterone level.

Sometimes not ever: We evaluate for an ectopic by vaginal sono and quant HCG levels. We try to demonstrate a mass between the ovaries and uterus (adnexal). Rarely we can show an actual fetus and very rarely fetal heart activity outside of the uterus within an ectopic gestational sac. No earlier than 6-7 weeks. Most often we show a vascular adnexal mass and no intrauterine pregnancy with elevated serum HCG levels.
