There isn't a "best": There isn't a single best medication for tension headache. Although many medications may work, what's right for one person may not be right for another. The decision on what medication to use depends an an individual person's circumstances, especially the medications a person is already on. Having said that, lifestyle changes are often the most effective headache prevention measures.

Other meds can help: Tension headaches are usually caused by prolonged tension in the muscles of the scalp, neck and face. They can be caused by stress or sleep deprivation. Mild cases can be treated with aspirin, Ibuprofen or naprosyn (naproxen). Anticonvulsants may help. Muscle relaxants may also help but can also be habit-forming. Try getting adequate sleep, deep breathing, relaxation, meditation, stress mgmt or yoga.
