A member asked:

Can poor nutrition lead to diabetes? as in low calories and lots of water everyday. will the blood panel tests and urine tests show any abnormalities?

See below: Low calories and water will not cause diabetes. There are many underlying causes of diabetes, e.g., genetics, lack of exercise, excess weight and high carbohydrate intake. To reduce your risk of diabetes, exercise 30 minutes/day, maintain a healthy lean weight and get your fasting blood sugar tested in consultation with your doctor.

Yes: Being overweight and inactive can lead to insulin resistance and eventually to type two diabetes. Try to maintain a healthy weight for your age and height. try to be physically active. Eat a healthy diet which minimizes processed foods and includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

No: Low calories and drinking lots of water could lead to malnourishment and vitamin deficiencies. But on the other hand poor high calorie diet can lead to insulin resistance and finally type 11 DM
