Most often: food!: The first thing that comes to mind, of course, is diabetes. But for many pregnant women, kidney function changes. Often, the same morning a pregnant women drinks a big glass of orange juice, we'll find sugar in her urine sample. However, that is not to say we ignore the findings -- all pregnant women do get tested for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks.

Healthy sugar is OK : There is increasing evidence that sweetened drinks can be detrimental to health, according to many nutritionists and physicians. The same applies to sweet and carbonated drinks, according to dentists. If a woman thinks she needs to replace fluids and electrolytes after intense exercise and/or sweating, she could have a low-calorie sports drink along with a piece of fruit or other healthful snack.

Depends when you ate: Check with your health care provider what your individual goals should be. Usually when you haven't eaten for 6 hours or more the levels should be in the 80-100 range. If you test 1-2 hours after a good sized meal, it would be more like 140-160. This would be for someone with their diabetes under good control.

Does the kidney work better with less sugar or more sugar?

Neither: Our kidneys work best with an 'appropriate' amount of blood sugar(or glucose). Too much, or little, of a good thing affects how our kidneys function.
