Not likely hormones: Yes, there are tests for arthritis. Your family doctor or a rheumatologist can take your history and order blood tests and x-rays depending upon your findings.

No reliable lab test: Arthritis is a clinical diagnosis. That means that a doctor who takes your history and examines you can make the diagnosis. X-ray films are not sensitive for arthritis unless advanced with bone damage. Mri can diagnosis it but most often is not necessary if swollen joints are seen on physical exam that have been swollen for many weeks not due to infection or injury. Be sure to see a rheumatologist.
