You must be wrong: Friend's kidney was removed if s/he had a nephrectomy. Friend possibly had a nephropexy, which is a very controversial procedure. Friend should consult a reputable urologist to diagnose cause of pain. Kidneys do not become loose after 10 years. Friend might have an obstruction problem or else pain might have a non-renal etiology.
