Not advised: Giving solids too early interferes with absorption of nutrients from formula or breast milk, especially iron. It can also backfire if you were hoping to "tide" baby over and fill his tummy longer: too early solids can cause gut upset ; wake him sooner. An old wive's tale that has been proven false.

Why: The nutrition in formulas is superior to that of cereal. The added material does not improve nutrition ; to counter common myth, it doesn't make them sleep better. When you start cereal it should be with a spoon in paste form to teach a new method of feeding. The one exception to this is thickening formulas to help with reflux.Formula powder is preferable to cereal but some use it.
