Eating disorders: Bulimia refers to a patient binging on high coloric foods then purging or vomiting. It can cause dental disease, and seizures as a result of electrolyte problems. Anorexia is more severe illness with up to 20% death rate untreated. Anorexics deliberately lose excessive wt using either food restriction or bulimic purging. Anorexics have other body image distortions, stop periods and starve.

BMI: People with anorexia nervosa must be abnormally underweight whereas those with bulimia nervosa are often in the normal weight range or even overweight. There are other differences as well, but this is probably the best single factor that can be used to discriminate between the two. Binging and purging can occur in either.
