What causes this forceful cough when having bronchitis?

Combination...: Cough is a reflex that protects the airways/lungs from infection so when infection and/of inflammation is sensed, cough results to rid the airway of infection. Unfortunately, cough itself can create inflammation thus creating more cough. To end this cycle, anti inflammatory inhalers are sometimes needed in addition to bronchodilators.

Inflammation: Lungs evolved to protect us by keeping foreign bodies out. Cough is one of the most effective defense mechanisms but it can be a very troubling symptom of any inflammatory insult (such as a bronchitis, usually caused by a virus). Sometimes the cough persists long after the bug is gone. You should have a cxr if you have persistent cough, and some inhalers can reduce (not eliminate) the cough.
