A member asked:

Diabetes. can i get it if my mother has it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: If one of your parents has type 2 diabetes , your risk is about 20%. If both parents have diabetes, your risk is about 30%. But the main risk factor for diabetes is obesity. The more you weigh, the higher your risk. If your bmi (body mass index) is more than 35, your risk of diabetes is 100 times higher than it would be if your weight were normal.
