Yes, they can be: If you have a bacterial infection like strep or a viral infection - they are contagious.

Can be: Sore throats can be caused by viruses, allergies, throat irritation by something you are eating, and bacterial infections. If it is a virus or a bacterial infection, it can be contagious. The most likely way to spread it is by direct contact, (kissing), airborne particle, (coughing), or indirect contact, (coughing and getting the contagion on a handle which someone else then touches.
