Underlying problem: Enlarged atria occur when ones blood pressure is high, the heart muscle is weakened or one or more heart valves are not functioning normally. Hypertension is first on the list, statistically. Your doctor or a cardiologist should assess your cardiovascular status and, after a careful exam and tests (including an echocardiogram), give you a clear explanation of the problem and its treatment.
