Possibly: If you're using the regular immediate release ambien, (zolpidem) cutting a pill in half and using it is possible. It's not recommended with Ambien (zolpidem) cr (controlled release), though. Controlled release or xr medications have a special coating that allows them to be released over time, in different parts of your GI system. Cutting the pill breaks this coating, and then you no longer have "controlled release.".
