I know that normal ao cusp separation is >1.5cm, but is there an upper limit? or does it only open as wide as the aorta walls allow?

Cusp separation: Cusp separation on echo varies by the plane in which it is measured. The cusps anatomically can only open as wide as the aortic walls. The surface area of the valve opening between the cusps is what is more indicative of obstruction or not. Separation is a surrogate measurement.
