I stepped on a chestnut shell and it splintered off into my foot, and even though the splinter is out, it had a small amount of pus. how to treat it?

Infection: Soak the foot in epsom salts and put topical antibiotic for a day or two, if it is still has pus there may be some retained shell in you're foot so follow up with you're primary care physician or a podiatrist for removal.
