Menstral cycle: It is not uncommon to have heavier periods on occasion. There is some variability with the depth of sloughing of the lining of the uterus. It depends on the hormonal levels and variability. Some cycles the whole uterine lining will slough and this accounts for the heavier periods. The levels of hormones and substances released from the cells will cause the cramping to be variable as well.
