May not be but...: Halitosis (bad breath) may not be the cause of the problem, but it can be a health issue, it could be anything from periodontal disease to gerd to diabetes. He should see a dentist or other health professional asap.

fetor oris: Oral odors can e a result of dental disease or gum disease and the aroma can be quite offensive; particularly in smokers; an exam by a dentist can be helpful in evaluation and management; if the odor persists, it may be related to stomach or reflux issues which would be addressed by the appropriate physician or gastroenterologist.
