DBT vs meds and CBT: At least in United States the primary treatment for borderline personality disorder is dialectical behavior therapy. The primary treatments for bipolar disorder on the other hand include a combination of medication as you are already aware and cognitive behavioral therapy. Your antidepressant is the most likely of all antidepressants to cause rapid cycling or mania. This will hopefully be offset for you by depakote, but if it is not then i would recommend that you discuss with your psychiatrist a different treatment option.

Bipolar vs BPD: The mainstay of treatment in bipolar disorder is mood stabilizing medications, plus supportive and/or cognitive behavioral therapy. People generally function well between episodes. Borderline pd, is ongoing. Primary treatment for borderline pd is long-term insight-oriented psychotherapy, along with dialectical behavioral therapy for skills training. Meds are sometimes (not always) used.
