It depends: It is important to be monitored while on an atypical antipsychotic to watch out for side effects and it is important to only take an atypical for as long as it is necessary. Its a balance that must be based upon how much good the drug is doing versus any side effects it might cause- blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides in particular should be checked - watch for any movement disorders.
