foreign body: Most commonly, a foreign body, like a speck of dirt, a metal shard, etc will get into your eye and cause a corneal abrasion. These can be painful and need to be treated, especially if over the pupil, so scarring is less likely to occur (which if occurs over the pupil could cause visual problems).
