See below: Addiction is primarily defined by its psychological or behavioral component, which does have a biological basis. There is no such thing as physical addiction. There is physical dependence, which usually includes tolerance and withdrawals and is usually a part of addiction, but does not have to be. Addiction is defined by uncontrolled use, continued use despite negative consequences and craving.

Addiction: Physical addiction or dependence is when chronic use of a substance results in tolerance, and when abrupt discontinuation or tapering of the substance results in unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The person shows physiological craving for the substance. Psychological dependence is feeling the need for the substance because it induces enjoyable mental effects.
