Outside/hard to say: The anus has two sphincters before the outlet. An internal automated one that keeps the fecal mass up and seldom dilates unless you are trying to evacuate. The external sphincter is usually closed at rest and you can close it harder if the inner sphincted is opening and you are trying to hold back a stool. Trauma to the outside sphincter or nerve damage can leave it weak and open.
