Not common: Shortly after anesthesia for a tonsillectomy, it is not uncommon to have hiccups. This is, as you might expect, a side effect of general anesthesia. As the anesthetics wear off, the hiccups usually go away. However, persistent hiccups after tonsillectomy is not a common phenomenon once the anesthesia wears off.
