Athletes foot: Athletes foot is the common name for a skin infection of the foot caused by a fungus that lives in the skin cells. It is promoted by warm, moist, and dark conditions common to the foot. Fungal infections of the skin can arise anywhere in the skin where these conditions are present such as the groin or armpit. Skin fungus will not spread to or infect lung tissue.
