cause of pain: In the spine the nerve roots exit out thru a space in the bone called the neural foramen. The exiting nerve root can become compressed/pinched as the exit thru the foramen from a combination of factors to include hypertrophy of the adjacent facet joint (osteophyte), as well as herniation of the intervertebral disc material...Ie the disc/ostephyte complex.
