A member asked:

Why do some people have light periods and some have heavy periods. what determines the amount of blood?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hormones: The amount a woman bleeds has a lot to do with her hormone production. The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen causes lining to thicken, and Progesterone causes lining to thin and eventually come off as a menstruation. Sometimes bleeding affected by thyroid, being thin/heavy, and pituitary. Other times a polyp or fibroid can affect as well.
