A member asked:

Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to have anxiety attacks?

Unlikely: This is a situation where two conditions that are very common (mitral valve prolapse and anxiety) may coexist in the same individual but is does not mean one caused the other. Some people with mvp may experience palpitations which could be unsettling and someone with anxiety may feel overwhelmed by having what they percieve as "something wrong with their heart".

Possibly: Patients with mitral valve prolapse also have a higher incidence of several other medical and mental health problems, including generalized anxiety disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and migraine headaches just to name a few.
