A member asked:

Can fifth disease be transferred to a pregnant woman's fetus in the final trimester?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Fifth disease is a viral process that is usually experienced in childhood. It can infect a susceptible adult, pregnant or not. During the illness the normal body's bone marrow often slows down blood production for a while, but this goes unnoticed since we only replace 1-2% of out blood/day. However, if a fetus experiences 5ths, the effect can be significant. Close OB monitoring is important.
