Get proper tests: It sounds like your mom is hyperthyroid, but if her thyroid hurts she might well have thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition. With thyroiditis sometimes the thyroid may be overactive alternating with underactive. Ask her doctors to check anti-thyroid antibodies and when her symptoms are strong check her free t3, (liothyronine) the most sensitive test of thyroid function which for some reason most docs seldom test.
