Different enzymes: Sgot (ast) and SGPT (alt) are both present in liver cells. Ast is also present in red cells, heart, muscles etc, whereas alt is more specific to liver cells. See this site for more info. http://www.medicinenet.com/liver_blood_tests/page2.htm.
