Canker sores: Canker sores can be treated, but are difficult to prevent, because the exact cause of canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is unknown. They appear on the lips, tongue and inside of the mouth. Causes may include stress, irritation from a sharp object like a chipped tooth, acidic foods, and an underlying systemic disease.
