swelling: Ganglion cysts of the thumb arise from the synovium of one of the joints of the thumb. This can be the mp joint, ip joint or cmc joint, they are swollen tense cystic masses usually on the dorsum of the joint. Ganglions of the ip joint can also cause nail deformities. If painful or symptomatic seek care of a hand surgeon.
