Bacterial infection: This will vary with the type of infection. Cellulitis or infection of the skin will usually show redness, induration (hard swelling), warmth of the area, tenderness, sometimes discharge which may be purulent, and occasionally there will be pain out of proportion to the clinical appearance if the infection has progressed beneath the skin and is producing fasciiitis.
