Steroids normal : If your doctor feels that you may have an excessively traumatic extraction, it is entirely normal fir him/her to prescribe a corticosteroid to help control swelling and collateral tissue damage post-op. If you have IV sedation it can be injected directly (e.G dexamethasone) or prescribed as in pill form (medrol, or methyl-prednisalone). Check your rx for the exact name and dosage, and doc if ?S.

Sometimes: You need to be careful with steroid use as they also weaken your immune system and can make an infection worse. See a qualified oral surgeon to determine if you need steroids with your situation.

Common: Very common for oral surgeons to use steroids to reduce pain and swelling in third molar extraction. For best results, make sure you are evaluated and treated by a board certified oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
