Topical medications: "permanent" darkening of the skin is usually related to inflammation due to trauma or sunburns, , or other post-inflammatory reactions of the skin. This is known as PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) Treatments usually consist of topical medications as well as sunblock. Many patients can also get significant improvements after laser treatments to areas of excessive pigmentation
