Growth cntrs close: Linear growth continues as long as the growth centers that permit linear growth are open. These are best studied in the wrist and hand where dozens of centers are visible on x-ray. The pubertal hormones accelerate growth and the closure of the centers. Most males will close their growth centers at a bone maturity of 17 years. Some with delayed closure will grow more, some into their early 20's.
