i was diagnosed with dermotagraphia which causes my skin to become very itchy for long periods of time and whenever i scratch my skin breaks out into hives. my doctor prescribed that i take zyrtec every day. will this cause negative side effects?

: Zyrtec shouldn't have any important side effects. The cause of dermatograhia is vary elusive. I usually refer such patients to an allergist for evaluation,treatment &amp; follow-up.

is it bad to take claritin (loratadine) d for an extended period of time? it's the only med thats worked for my congested nose. zyrtec didn't help & was on it 1mo.

Decongestant: What you are responding to in Claritin (loratadine) d is the decongestant, but with time it loses effect and may predispose you to high blood pressure. You are better off consulting an allergist and getting proper treatment for your allergies especially that you also use an inhaler, the 2 are probably linked.

if i take zertec for a long period 10mo then switch to claritin (loratadine) can my sinuses become dependent on zyrtec and over produce mucus w/o zyrtec in system?

Unlikely: While the "good" effect of zyrtec (cetirizine) will be gone in several days, there is no known problem of "rebound" or worsening symptoms when stopping oral antihistamines.  More likely, is the continued exposure to the allergens.  Here is where an allergist will be able to assist.

are doses of cetirizine (reactine) 20mg bid too high for a period of 6 months. could you link any studies about that dosage for long periods of time.

Ok: Anthistamine has a very high safety margin. In fact many of our patients with chronic hives have been taken cetirizine in the dose mentioned for years  without any problem. The major side effects would be drowsiness and dry mouth.

what happens if you take more then one cetirizine in a 24 hour period?  does it work better?

Accepted Answer

Possible side effect: Cetirizine is only recommended to be take once every 24 hours. Taking more than the recommended dose can be harmful in terms of increasing the chances of side effects. If your allergy symptoms are not relieved by taking over the counter anti-histamines then talk with your physician to determine additional or alternative therapies. The symptoms may be something other than allegies.

Yes: There should be no interaction between the two meds

Yes: It appears so although any diet aid or body fat burning agent can have side effects of its own. Use caution with the tonalin.

Not necessary: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are considered new generation antihistamines and have the same effects.  If a person accidentally took these at the same time, there is likely no adverse effect, but there is really no need to take both for treatment of symptoms.  If symptoms of allergies are not controlled, see an allergist for a better treatment plan.

Yes: Yes, they don't interact.

Accepted Answer

Yes but why?: You can take 2 Zyrtec (cetirizine) at the same time, but my question to you would be why do you feel the need? If it is for allergic rhinits it may be more helpful to take it once twice a day. If it is for hives/urticaria the dose is sometimes higher.
