Prevents infection: Zymar is an antibiotic, commonly used to prevent infection. Many surgeons use zymar, but there are many drops that can be used for this purpose.

Accepted Answer

Common side effect: Stinging is a common side effect with gatafloxacin eye drops - as with most antibiotic eye drops. The reason is that if you have an eye infection then your eye is inflamed and doesn't care much to have stuff dropped into it. No need to stop. Incidentally zymar is no longer marketed in the us.

Usually nothing: The expiration date is a recommended timeframe insuring sterility of the vial and full potency.  If kept cool, dark place (drawer etc), then should not be a problem.  Issue is that if bacteria grow in the open vial, then possible infection may result, or irritation from gradual chemical breakdown.

No: It is a prescription drug and should only be used under a physician's care.  It is commonly used following Lasix (furosemide) surgery or in cases of mild to moderate eye infections.

Depends on…: Depth, diameter, & severity of the ulcer & whether you have any conditions that may prolong healing (e.g. Diabetes) or are taking any meds that suppress the immune system (systemic corticosteroids, immuno-suppressants for rheumatoid arthritis or other auto-immune diseases. Zymar is a fluoro-quinolone antibiotic like cipro (ciprofloxacin). Your doc can best give time frame for healing based on above factors.

No: I would consult with your ophthalmologist prior to using a medication for something other than its prescribed use.  Also, prophylactic use of antibiotics can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
