Usually nothing: The expiration date is a recommended timeframe insuring sterility of the vial and full potency. If kept cool, dark place (drawer etc), then should not be a problem. Issue is that if bacteria grow in the open vial, then possible infection may result, or irritation from gradual chemical breakdown.
