Migraine: That kind of vision is often associated with migraine. There's a type called acephalgic migraine which usually has the zig zag lasting about 20min and going away.

Ocular Migraine?: This could be an ocular migraine which occurs in the visual processing centers of the brain and results in classic zig zag lines or prismatic colors.  It usually lasts minutes to hours and can be seen with the eyes open or closed.  Most will go away by themselves and not be accompanied by a headache.  Risk factors are similar to normal migraines.

Most likely migraine: Visual events described as wavy, zigzag, saw toothed, jagged, scintillating, often are a result of a migrainal event that has stimulating the visual path in the brain. They may or may not be associated with headache, nausea, vomiting or othe associated symptoms. To be sure, see your eye md for an exam to make sure it isn't a retinal issue. Also, neurologist often rec. treatment of migraines.

?is it migraine: Apparent you have history of cardiac issues, and apparently also diabetes, and BP problems at a young age.  Although you could also have migraine auras from the neuronal suppression over the occipital area, I am more concerned about the circulation within the vertebrobasilar system, and would recommend a ct-angiogram study, which is quite benign but very useful.  Your aura characteristics may help.

"Common"?: Not sure what you mean by "common." It doesn't seem to be common for YOU. I recommend you look up "scintillating scotoma" &amp; "fortification spectra" &amp; see whether the descriptions fit your symptoms. Migraines can change over time, especially in women, as migraines are often exquisitely sensitive to either short-term or long-term changes in female hormones.

Ocular migraines!: Ocular migraines are a form of migraines that take place in the occipital cortex (part of the brain that interprets/controls vision).  They lack the severe headache as common migraines.  The symptoms are usually all or mostly visual and are typically described as flashing of light or ziz-zag lights in the vision.  They usually last less than 30 minutes and affect the vision out of both eyes.

Orthostatic: Perhaps you became orthostatic after exercise or sudden change in position when your blood pressure suddenly dropped and you had the visual phenomenon you described. If it was brief and not repeating, i would not worry about that.
