Fracture, arthritis: A lateral, oblique and mortise view would show any abnormalities..ie. fracture, arthritis or abnormal articulation.

went to new podiatrist. he visually looked at my feetand ankles.  said new orthotics will help. didn't do thorough exam ot xray of ankles.  still sore?

2nd opinion: Orthotics may help your feet quite a bit.  However, it is reasonable to expect your podiatrist to examine your feet.  If your did not receive an exam on your feet, you may want to go to another podiatrist and receive a second opinion.

You, as : A patient, can't. See an orthopedic surgeon and, if he/she thinks its needed, obtain an xray.

If Pain Better: If the pain is improving and your ankle is stable to walk on, this is likely normal evolution of a sprain. The blood can pool in a line above the base of the foot and begin to look alarming. The most important question is whether it is worsening or not improving. If that is the case, get in to see your doctor again about this issue.

Injury: If you are still having symptoms from a remote injury, return to your doctor.  Repeat imaging studies may be indicated.  Even if xray/MRI looked normal a long time ago, there may be abnormalities present now.

6 yo boy has localized pain a couple inches above left ankle for about 10 days. dr. said to do xray or wait 1 week. risky to wait? concern for tumor?

Need history &amp;: physical findings to hazard a guess as to whether his localized pain is from tumor, trauma or infection. If he "twisted his ankle" 10 days ago, an X-ray would show disruption of the cortex of the tibia or fibula,  if fractured. Is the pain on the medial or lateral side of his leg? Can he bear weight on that leg? Does he limp? Does the site have swelling, redness, heat or tenderness to touch?

Ankle sprain: A most frustrating injury, ankle sprains can be worse than a fracture, as the ligaments are weakened or stretched. Recurring injury as described weakens the ankle further. An MRI is often helpful in determining the extent of non bone injury (ligaments, tendons). See a podiatrist or orthopedic foot surgeon for guidance on rehab

i rolled my ankle running about 3 months ago. got an xray and they said it wasn't broke. its still swollen but there is not really any pain,what to do?

Chronic swelling: You may have sprained a ligament that's leading to chronic swelling although there isn't much pain. Try using heat/ice compression to the ankle twice a day. If it doesn't improve in a few days to week then see your doctor for possible physical therapy.
