Variable: Amounts of fat and gland tissue exist in each patient but usually the appearance is symmetrical. No masses, asymmetry, concerning calcifications, or skin thickening.

Yes: This is very likely normal - breast tissue is glandular and usually can produce secretions.

Chest pain: Could be nerve related if you have had some recent trauma or surgery to the area.  Patients describe shooting pain that is intermittent and not usually associated with an activity.  Inflammation of the breast bone or cartilage at junction of breast bone is a possibility as well.  Musculoskeletal pain is usually associated with certain movements or deep breathing.  Heartburn/Cardiac also a concern.

45 f. ive had a total of 7 radiology tests within the past year (ct and x-ray)for various health issues. concerned about radiation exposure and cancer now? suppose to get mammogram and another ct this year, scared to have them done. should i cancel?

: Not knowing all your history &amp; clinical findings, I don't think we could advise you to skip those tests. There are no guidelines of how many CT scans one should have in their lifetime. I do know that it is more of a concern for children who are at risk for other cancers later in life. I'm confident that your physicians feel the benefits of the testing recommended outweigh any risks.

: Risk and benefit ratio. The amount of radiation and the potential theoretical risk needs to be balanced against your health needs. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination review of your test data. If you are overweight, losing weight is imperative.

Radiation: The radiation exposure associated with mammography is very low yet not zero.  Therefore, it is best to avoid mammograms before age 40 unless there is a strong family history.  Most importantly, the benefit of mammography--early breast cancer diagnosis--far outweighs these risks in appropriate women.  Mammograms save lives.

Usually: The tech will confirm your identity. She may ask about your coffee or chocolate consumption, when your LMP was. You will usually be asked to fill out a form asking about any history relating to the breasts. She will want to know if you have detected any new lumps.

Mammogram: In order to obtain the best mammographic images, the technologist needs to compress the breasts which can, unfortunately, be painful or uncomfortable.

what is the appropriate age to start mammography for all women?

Some variations in p: There is an ongoing debate about this question. In the US, it often recommended that women at standard risk begin mammography at 40 years of age. A recent revised recommendation suggested  that age be upped to 45 years. In Europe the Age is 50 years and older.
My recommendation is to begin at 40 years of age and repeat it every 12 to 18 month intervals. others may have different opinions.
