More exercise!: Strenous muscular work demands more arterial blood flow, and therefore more venous return!  I have large veins on arms (wresting, weighltifting), but when i took up mountain biking, the veins hypertrophied on the legs!

Fluid retention ?: There are several conditions that can cause the symptoms that you described. Although some may be benign, there are others that should be treated. I suggest you see your primary care doctor as soon as these symptoms appear.

Keep moving...: The general thought is that varicose veins, the hallmark of venous insufficiency, is caused by several things, including heredity, being overweight, pregnancy, standing and sitting for long periods and just general inactivity. Exercise is probably best for both immediate treatment and prevention of varicose veins. Being mobile and moderate exercising is best. Walking is fine but avoid running.

Laser or sclero: The best way to treat facial spider veins depends on the size of the veins and the experience of the one who is treating. Sclerotherapy actually works very well for facial spider veins but you need to see a very experienced sclerothrapist for treating the tiniest of veins. It is probly safe to say that laser, ipl, and thermocoagulation (all methods of treating veins with heat) is used more often.

Be seen: Chances are if you are thin it just means you have noticed them. If you are overweight or a heavy drinker or other conditions you should be checked.

Yes.: Veins return blood back to the heart and  can carry a large volume of blood.  Depending on many factors including levels of hydration,  genetics, outside temperature and even physical activity, the size of the veins will vary.  Another important function of the veins is to help control body temperature and this too will affect vein size.  Also with aging, veins enlarge as tissue volume decreases.

i recently went to get a venipuncture, the woman who did it poked me at least 4 times and was searching for the vein under my skin. my arm is very bruised, and what i am wondering is should i be worried if its hard and hurts when i barely touch it?

Yes: For problems after a blood draw or an IV, one's primary care doctor can examine to see what is going on. In-person examination is needed, so a video consultation would not be too helpful. The doctor wants to fine out if there is inflammation with infection, inflammation without infection, a hematoma, or a chemical reaction (in the case of an IV fluid problem).

Normal finding: I am amazed about how often I have women ask me about the veins on their breast.  Occasionally they are spider veins but mostly they are blue veins.  These are almost always normal findings and normal variations of chest veins.  They tend to be more pronounced in fair skinned females and they may be related to hereditary factors or even pregnancies.  No treatment is necessary unless for cosmetics.

Spider veins: Spider veins are the tiny superficial veins just under the skin.  They tend to be a cosmetic problem most often and wouldn't typically cause muscle pain.
