Weight gain not loss: PCOS is caused by insulin resistance in the majority of people with this condition.  Typically there is a family history for diabetes, weight problems, and other family members with PCOS.  You are born with the genetic tendency, but weight gain contributes to insulin resistance.  Weight loss improves the condition.

PCOS: Treatment for pcos is weight loss. It's important to look at your drug profile and make sure you are not on drugs that are causing weight gain. I'm sure you are already on a sensible diet/exercise routine.  If not, please start one. Other drugs for pcos: birth control pills (hormomes), spironolactone, metformin, actos, (pioglitazone) vaniqa, weight loss agents, infertility drugs...

Some thoughts...: Successful dieting requires that a person stick to a plan for years, so a good tasting diet is important. She must be happy with the foods she gets to eat, so severe calorie restriction is usually unsuccessful. A person can CUT BACK on calories enough to lose 1 pound a week, and she will be more likely to stay with that modest type of plan. One pound a week is 52 per year. May need PCOS medicine.

Testing: You might have Insulin or usgar abnormalities. You should get tested. Metformin may be useful. With pcos exercise is of particular importance and is usually required for weight loss with pcos.

Yes: Weight loss will help with all symptoms of pcos including excess hair growth. Unfortunately the excess hair that has become darker and thicker may not go away completely, but weight loss will prevent new hair from growing. You may still need to apply other methods for completely getting rid of the excess hair such as laser. Talk to your doctor if weight loss does not completely address hair growth.

Metformin is necessa: Get doc to give you metformin in full dose getting it gradually and taking it in middle of meal AM and PM 1000mg a day  twice a day= the total dose should be 2000mg.

PCOS: Sorry but no shortcuts here: diet, exercise, portion control and have your gYN minor all hormonal levels including thyroid and blood sugar as well as female and testosterone levels. Please consult a  personal trainer and a registered dietician.

PCO: Loosing weight to fall within your recommended BMI is great but there is no guarantee that your cycle will re-regulate once you fall within that recommended weight range.  It is true that if you are too over or under weight your cycle can become dysregulated but PCO encompasses so much more than that.  Reach your target weight and see what happens.  If you don't regulate, then chat with your GYN

CAN EXERCISE/surgery: Is the 13cm cyst in the ovary or somewhere else.If ovarian cyst 13 cm it may need surgery especially if symptomatic
To loose weight you need to be on diet low in calories and carbohydrate.Consult a nutritionist and you can do exercise
But do consult your Gynecologist about your cyst of 13cm and growing with history of PCOS
