Brain cancer: In general, Stage 4 means distant spread to other organs other than the organ where the tumor started (lung cancer that spreads to brain, would be Stage 4 Lung Cancer). There are 4 stages, so Stage 4 is the most extensive degree of spread, unfortunately.

Primary brain tumors are not staged, because they rarely spread.  Prognosis is based on age, location, histology, functional status, extent, etc

Can't tell: What is the primary, and what type of cancer?  There are literally thousands.  If this is the first time it has been diagnosed, this may be a type that we can cure.  Most people with metastatic disease that is this extensive live less than 12 months, but there are many variables and no physician ever really says, "you have thus-and-so long to live." cherish each day.

Unfortunately, low: Stage IV ovarian cancer unfortunately has a very low survival rate. The five year survival rate for this stage is around 11%.

: If melanoma becomes generalized, it is very common to metastasize to the brain.  For a time the lesion(s) may be quiescent, but there is a  nasty tendency for this cancer to present as a massive brain hemorrhage on occasion.

There is Treatment: For HER2 positive breast Cancer, there are some good treatments available. Ask your medical Oncologist and let us know what treatments have been offered or done already. Radiotherapy to brain is one good solution to controlling the brain metastases, in addition to chemotherapy and Herceptin (trastuzumab) which is a good drug.
