i am going on zoloft (sertraline) 25mg, i've heard it causes weight gain. how can i avoid this? i am wanting to lose weight

There should not be: much weight gain on that small a dose. If there is,1200 cal diet daily will help.

Appetite increase: A number of psychiatric drugs, including most SSRIs (with the exception usually of fluoxetine or Prozac) cause an increase in appetite.  I am not aware of evidence that they lower metabolic rate.  Increasing physical activity and being more careful with eating, particularly craving-driven eating, generally helps. Drinking more water gives you a full sensation in your stomach; also carrots &amp; celery

SSRI and weight gain: The category of antidepressants SSRI and as well SNRI typically can but do not always cause weight gain - in addition, diminished sex drive, inability to ejaculate/climax , and flatness of feelings (numbness).  Other associated medications can be implicated, eating disorders, hypothyroidism, sleep disorders, and hormonal imbalance can contribute.  Bupropion, lamotrogine, nefazadone, MAOI's better.

Can be a side effect: All medications have side effects, and zoloft (sertraline) is no exception. If you are on an antidepressant that is associated with weight gain, be sure you are eating sensibly and getting exercise. Exercise can actually help improve your mood - so it's doubly beneficial. There are antidepressants that are "weight neutral." ask your doctor if an adjustment is in order, but remember - depression is no picnic!

SSRI  can add weight: SSRI such as ZOLOFT (sertraline) are commonly prescribed antidepressants because they have been shown to be effective and are generally well tolerated but not side effect free. Weight gain is not uncommon. Speak to your doctor.Together you may decide it  is advisable to adjust your  medications  and/or to  add a form of therapy  to your treatment plan.Good luck.

Zoloft (sertraline): Not sure if taking other medications with zoloft (sertraline) or if your diet or activity level changed, but please do work with your prescribing doctor who monitors your zoloft (sertraline) and any necessary dose adjustments to avoid withdrawal or relapse.

Talk to physician: I really suggest you discuss these concerns with your own physician, who knows you & your case.  There must have been a reason zoloft (sertraline) was prescribed, and symptoms could come back if it's stopped too soon.  If you are dissatisfied with zoloft (sertraline), your doctor can review your situation & consider other effective treatments that might be less likely to produce weight gain.
