Ingrown toenails: They can be treated surgically and then the offending portion of the nail (at the base) treated so that it doesn't grow back.  Its best not to get them in the first place -  buy a pair of trimmers specific for toenails - the curve is different than fingernail clippers.    Avoid trimming too close which leaves a little spike that causes the ingrowning.

It may hurt, but...: There is a small piece of nail still embedded in the corner. You need to get that out. Soak to soften the area and try to get it free. If you can't get it out on your own, a podiatrist can. Sometimes this can be done without numbing the toe, but often, anesthesia is necessary. If it is a chronic condition, there is a very successful surgery that can be done to permanently correct the problem.

See a Podiatrist: I woulld recommend seeing a podiatrist.  The procedure to remove an ingrown toenail is done everyday by a podiatrist.  The procedure is usually painless and provides immediate relief.  I would not recommend bathroom surgery to remove the ingrown toenail.

Needs treatment: An ingrown toenail is caused by a nail spicule grownig into the skin. This piece of nail must be removed in order for the nail to heal. In many cases the spicule is in the back or middle of the nail border. If this is the case it would be very difficult and painful for you to try and remove yourself. You can even make it worse if the you do not get out all of the nail spicule. See a podiatrist.

It : It is important to cut your nails straight across and not trim them down into the corners of your toes. Also, wear shows that are wide at the front, so that they don't put any pressure on the toes from the side...High heels that come to a point put a lot of pressure on the toes, causing the nails to get ingrown.

If they do persist, you should see your physician, who can numb up your toe and remove the part of the nail that keeps getting ingrown.  If it still continues, your doctor can use an acid to kill the cells that produce the nail that keeps getting ingrown so that it doesn't grow back.  You would then be left with a skinnier nail, less likely to get ingrown.

Injury: The sharp end of nail probably injures the skin of toe, resuled in infection or inflammation. Using cool compresses to calm it down. If no significant sign of infection, the inflammation/pain would subsided in time.
