No: What is the purpose for you to take metformin? For diabetes? If it is for diabetes, you should continue take it even with period.

i got a period 3 weeks after starting metformin 500mg 3x a day, but it was really light. is that normal? i hadn't had it for 2 months before

Probably not: Metformin is used to treat diabetes.  Years ago it was found to be associated with restoring menstrual cycles and fertility in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) due to the link with Insulin elevations.  However, in the last 5 years, studies have not demonstrated metformin as an improvment of fertility in pcos patients and is only indicated if the patient has prediabetes or diabetes.

Yes: it is working if you are having more regular periods (not every normal woman has a routine 28 day cycle)

Hmm: Your doctor could prescribe birth control, order an ultrasound to see why you are having dysmenorrhea. If you are on Metformin for polycystic ovarian syndrome, this can be common. Without a complete history and physical it will be difficult to advise further. Please see your doctor for more answers.

Unusual choice: Metformin is a very unusual choice to control a menstrual cycle.  Are you sure you are getting the right medication or that is really the reason it was prescribed?  It's typically prescribed for diabetes control.  You may want to check with your provider and/or pharmacist to ensure this isn't medication error.

Reason for use.: Generally metformin is used to help control type 2 diabetes also polycysticovary syndrome which is associated with insulin intolerance.  If the latter, your menstrual changes are associated and a desirable result

Metformin: Will only help with fertility if you have pcos or Insulin resistance. The most effective dose is 1000 mg twice a day with meals. Starting dose is 500 mg twice a day and need to be increased in steps week.Y as tolerated. Make sure you're on the maximum dose if tolerated to get the full benefits of the drug. Diet, exercise and weight loss is also essential.
