Yes: Retinal detachment is a very serious condition and surgery to repair it requires that you take very good care of yourself while it heals.  Both smoking and alcohol have been demonstrated to increase the risk for retinal damage in patients with other risk factors.  I suggest you avoid both while recovering and until your retinal surgeon gives the OK.

Before : Before i would recommend this treatment to a patient i would want to see peer reviewed studies that proved it was more efficacious and less dangerous than traditional treatment.  I doubt there are "fewer risks" than surgery

Less calories: First, congratulations on the hard work you put in toward your 30 lbs weight loss! While you are recovering, it is understandable that it will be difficult to keep up your physical activity. You will likely need to cut down on your daily calorie consumption for a short period of time until you are able to walk again. You may want to cut it by no more than 10% for that short period.
