Tympanoplasty: Not normally a painful operation. If the procedure is done through the ear canal, there is much less pain. There can be some pain, swelling, and discomfort,  if it is done via an incision behind the ear or a post-auricular approach. Overall, most people are not on a lot of pain  post-op.

No: A perforation of the eardrum alone should not cause fatigue and equilibrium problems.  Especially if it is an old one.

Yes: A hole  in your eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation) does not allow the normal hearing mechanism that god constructed for you to work properly, so you cannot amplify the sound naturally. However, a hearing aid will bypass the hole and amplify the sound to get it to your inner ear and brain so you can interpret the sound which allows  you to hear better.

i have a small hole in my eardrum and the doctor told me not to get what're in it. what happens if i do get water in it?

Trapped: Water could become trapped in your middle ear. This would be potentially uncomfortable and in the worst case could prompt an infection. Cold water could also cause you to feel dizzy/unbalanced or nauseated.

That being said, you'll probably be fine!

i have a hole in my eardrum, will i pick up viruses or bacteria from fresh water if i get in?

Accepted Answer

No: An ear drum perforation opens the middle ear to exposure and it will be the water that can be the irritant and cause problems rather than exposure to viruses or bacteria.  You should consider using an ear plug if you are anticipating doing a lot of swimming or having excessive water exposure.

i have a hole in my eardrum from years of tubes. i have hearing loss and a constant blocked feeling.. would a hearing aid help? don't want surgery.

Check with ENT,MD: You need a complete ENT evaluation including hearing test to find the cause of hearing loss and follow his/her recommendations.
Tubes in the ears for serous otitis media can leave a scar but do not cause hearing loss and you may have blocked eustacian tube or collection of fluid behind the ear drum or ear wax causing your hearing loss and hearing aid may not be of help.

Have : Have you seen your e.N.T doctor again?  If not, then you should for the continuing pain and drainage.  It's important to have someone look in your ear with a microscope and see whether there is still a hole in your drum or not.  There are a few different reasons for your symptoms to continue such as:
- an unresolving infection.  You could be infected with a bacteria resistant to the drops you've been on or a fungus not affected with antibiotics.  This can be diagnosed with an ear culture.
- cholesteatoma - this is a skin cyst in the middle ear that can cause persistent drainage.  This usually requires surgery to fix.
- acute otitis - if your ear is continuing to get wet through swimming or showering, then you may be getting recurrent infections.  This can be solved with antibiotics and strict dry ear precautions.
- skin disease - various skin disorders such as psoriasis can occur in the ear canal and cause pain and drainage.  The skin disease needs to be diagnosed and treated for resolution.
Since these are only a few of the many things that can be going on, it is important that you see an e.N.T. Doctor for re-evaluation.

Ear fullness: If you have a "permanent hole" in your ear drum, you cannot physically have a blocked ear. How did you get the "hole" ? is it a perforation or a tube? when was the last time you had an ear exam? why do you think your ear is blocked? If its a tube and you ear is blocked, it needs to be removed, but you can also try antihistamines and decongestants as well as trying Valsalva maneuver.

can i use saline nasal spray if i have a permanent hole in my eardrum?

Accepted Answer

No: It not only cause you to become very dizzy but may introduce an infection into your middle ear.   Have you talked to an ENT to find out if the perforation can be repaired?
